Elocution Contest Held by Excelsior Rodge

An Elocution Contest was held Wednesday October 22 open to children ages 16 to 19 from riverside and nearby schools. Contestants paid 25 cents and submitted name age and selection to Mrs I Marsh Jewelry Store before October UK. The list shows selections from the new Grade 5 Reader for contestants to choose from.

Contests for Young Readers Include Classics and Poems

Contestants will be divided into two groups ages 10 to 13 and 14 to 16. Good prizes offered in both groups. Further particulars to follow.

Amendments To Liquor Laws For Manitoba Legislature

Amendments to the Temperance and Liquor Control Acts will headline the Manitoba legislature session opening likely Nov 27 or Dec 4. The timing aims to finish debate after the throne speech before the holiday recess. Treasurer F M Black plans to table the public accounts 15 days after the session begins.

Laksuayta Rivers Theatre Reopens Under Jason Gurney

Winnipeg man Jason Gurney to reopen Laksuayta Rivers moving picture theatre. Frank Wadham a Rivers resident and Crimean War veteran volunteered at the Great War outbreak. Arthur Bishop and James Reid joined the forces and left for Valcartier Camp. Grain shipments from Rivers continue, with whole train loads moving westward.

Rivers Council Minutes Set September Meeting Actions

The Rivers Council met Wednesday evening September 3 with Acting Mayor Often presiding. Minutes from the prior meeting were read and adopted. Resolutions authorize paying the Electric light account of 4919.41 and other accounts totaling 567.20. Land sale of Lot 7, Block 26 to Mrs. Shore for 25.00. The Barker offer on his property was rejected. The Council adjourned.

Alberta Saskatchewan Manitoba Wheat Pools Outline Payments

A Regina conference agreed an initial payment of 100 dollars per bushel for the 1924 crop to members of the Alberta Saskatchewan and Manitoba Wheat pools. Eight chartered banks reportedly authorized a 25 million dollar credit to finance pool operations based on No 1 Northern Fort William wheat.

Dentist Dr Hughes to Visit Rivers on September 16

Dr P G C Hughes of Brandon will be absent from Rivers this week but plans to return Tuesday September 16 to practice dentistry locally.
