Two Bradts Recall Souvenirs From Travels

Around Town Highlights and Local Visits in Winnipeg

Busi ness visitor James A. McKenzie is in Winnipeg this week. The Thankoffering meeting of the W.M.S. will be held on Wednesday Nov 7 with guest speaker Mrs Wesley G Nelson of Brandon. Clothing Drive ends. donations picked up by phoning 84 or 102. Rivers concert party performed at St David's near Oak Lake after Oct 22 anniversary supper. Participants included Mrs Vi Cole FC Le Fluffy LAC Wander William Radcliffe and Alex Whyte. Lance Corp Fred Beever, back from overseas as a walking casualty eight weeks ago, is visiting his parents in Rivers after discharge from four years service. Miss Hazel Steggles, daughter of Mr and Mrs C Steggles Sudbury Eng, arrived in Rivers and is visiting Mrs R B Riddick. Hazel and family left Rivers for the old country over 10 years ago.

Rivers Young People Organization Formed Meeting

An inaugural meeting of the Rivers Young People was held on Tuesday Oct 23 at Rev F W Lee's home. Officers elected include Edna Reynolds president Jack Hanlon vice president Margaret McKay secretary treasurer George Walker business convener Norma Ward social convener Margaret Frank literary convener Alan Wareham devotional convener The group plans to meet on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 8 pm in the United Church annex and invites high school age and older youths to join.

Funeral of Kenneth H. Spearin Held at Pettapiece

Friends gathered at Pettapiece Church last Friday afternoon for the funeral of Kenneth H. Spearin who died in Winnipeg on Monday October 22. Rev F W Lee of Rivers led the service with Rivers friends aiding in the choir and James McKenzie at the organ. Pallbearers named K Hill A Cassan J J Labelle J McIntyre W Pettapiece and G Wolstenholme. Interment followed in the family plot.

Vast banks of beautiful flowers conveyed the sympathy of scores of sorrowing friends at the adjoining cemetery. There is no way to control the atomic power we have harnessed unless we give God the reins.

National Poppy Day and war veteran support

National Poppy Day on Saturday November 10 promotes selling poppies by the Canadian Legion to raise funds for crippled and disabled World War I and II veterans. The piece notes poppy wearers and tagger activity, and mentions Europe's reconstruction with Mulberry harbour remnants, Dutch concrete caissons repairing dykes, and government-owned mines in the Netherlands.
