Farmers report drought strains with cisterns failing and at least one field plowed under due to worm damage. Miss A Grummett, leaving for Vancouver, honored by friends at Mrs A Smith home with a United Church presentation and address.
An evening at the IOCF Hall on Friday May 25 featured the Rebekahs of Confidence Lodge Transcona exemplifying a degree for Deborah Lodge Rapid City and Friendship No. 27 Rivers. Transcona led the team that won the Portland contest and plans a Montreal visit. A sumptuous Rivers banquet greeted arrivals and many locals hosted guests from Transcona and Rapid City with numerous members listed.
Rivers Golf Club hosted a May 24 tournament with about twenty Hamiota members and guests. J. McLellan of Hamiota posted the low score while visitors enjoyed a verandah lunch and a raffle drawing by President Chambers and James Walker of Rapid City for an Electric Floor Lamp.
The United Church held services at Lothair and Oak River last Sunday with Rev Hislop Dickson absent in Winnipeg. Daly and Petta piece services were led by L E Lynd and J J Snowden. Baptismal rites were given to Vernon Orio and Mervyn Anderson. The Rivers M and E Fund Committee met to plan funds collection and a member contribution program, with a 50 percent target by June 30.
G Wilkes announces a piano recital by his pupils on Wednesday June 6 at o o clock in the Oddfellows Hall with assisting artist Mrs KE Switzer elocutionist. Admission is free and the public is invited to attend.
All car owners willing to carry children to the Field Day at Rapid City on Friday June 8 are asked to sign up with Dr. Lyon Chairman of the School Board or R G Sinclair Sec Treas at the earliest. Cars should be ready to leave school at 9 a m sharp.
Lodge Colonial Sons of England Benefit Society will attend a Divine Service at St James Church Sunday afternoon next June 3 at 3 p.m. Brethren to be addressed by Rector Rev S L Nash. The lodge meets at the hall at 2 30 with invitation extended to visiting brethren.
A National Safety Council bulletin urges careful driving. Look out for children and never hit one. Do not speed around corners and drive on the right side. The right of way does not guarantee safety. Do not stop abruptly without warning and avoid backing up without looking. Do not pass or park on curves or hills. Slow for cross roads. Be courteous to drivers and officers.
Ten years ago conscription began with all males 19 and over called. A Home Economics Society run rest room filled a long felt need. Methodist Sunday School members drove to Roseville Church for services. Eight year old Jennie Robertson died on a train en route to Portage hospital for an operation. A Business Men's Special touring the west stopped at Rivers and met the Board of Trade.
