Weekend in History Highlights Two World Events

May 15 1919 the Winnipeg General Strike began when the Trades Council called a general strike in sympathy with May Day workers. The seven week walkout exposed class divisions in Canada. May 16 1930 prospect Gilbert LaBine found pitchblende at Great Bear Lake Northwest Territories, a uranium radium source. May 17 1939 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth arrived in Canada for a state visit, first reigning monarchs to visit Canada or any Commonwealth country. May 18 Sir Robert Borden announced conscription in 1917, a move that failed to win French Canadian support and deepened national rifts.
