Meadows of Manitoba highlight prairie preservation efforts

Environment Canada notes European settlers found vast grasslands now reduced by cultivation. Over decades conservation groups and governments protected more than 2,000 hectares in southeast Manitoba, home to the Manitoba Tall-grass Prairie Preserve with endangered plants and wildlife including western prairie fringed orchids and Powesheik Skipper butterflies. Local programs assist landowners in preserving mixed grass prairie while rare species such as the small white lady's slipper and ferruginous hawk remain at risk.
