Manitoba tackles coal ban and biomass transition plan
Manitoba moves to phase out coal for space and water heating by 2014 and shift users to biomass. The plan includes Biomass Energy Support Program grants up to 12 000 dollars for consumers and up to 50 000 dollars for biomass facilities, with a March 9 2012 deadline to apply. Farm groups led by Keystone Agricultural Producers oppose the timetable as too rapid while noting support for biomass development.
