Venice Campanile Built on Piles Through the Ages
The Venice bell tower of St. Mark's cathedral stands on piles driven into Adriatic mud over a thousand years. The original campanile began around 900, with major rebuilds after 1572 earthquake and 1829 foundation work. A collapse in 1902 led to construction of a reinforced concrete base and a 1905 re-erection.
