The first Eddystone lighthouse built by Winstanley 1696 to 1700 stood 100 feet high and was washed away in November 1703. Rudyerd built a wood and stone base tower 1706 to 1709 which burned in 1755. Smeaton's third tower 1757 to 1759, 85 feet tall with a 263 percent base diameter, inspired by an oak trunk, kept a 72 foot light visible 13 miles. A new 133 foot tower by Douglass replacing the reef section was completed 1879 to 1882. Smeaton’s tower was lowered to the first room level, remaining as a landmark.
