New Brick Setting Machine May Replace Skilled Labor
A trial at Grant Park brick yard shows a new brick setting machine can perform the work of twenty to twenty-five men and require only three operators. If adopted in Blue Island yards it could affect about one hundred workers earning five to six dollars daily. The machine also handles loading bricks into cars, but installation is costly and will require shed redesigns. The machine is still experimental with the factory located in an eastern city and Mr. William Sullivan of Chicago Heights as local agent. It may take years before full installation occurs and workers will likely transition to other jobs.
