Illinois Central Tests Rail Highway Bus to Reclaim Freight Market
The Illinois Central is trialing a dual mode bus with flanged wheels that run on rails and roads to protect railroad right of way. Inventor Frank R. Vagreol of Twin Coach advocates freight buses that load at factories, travel by highway to yards, then use trains to distribution points before final highway delivery. The test demonstrated on Chicago rail yards shows switches navigated and potential rail freight use, aiming to curb trucking competition.
