First Car Ride in Roseland Delights Town
The first "street car" from Riverdale left the Indiana Avenue bridge last Friday evening at 7 o clock and carried 365 passengers to Roseland. Fare was two and a half cents. S. P. Schoon owned the car with a team of heavy draught horses. Conductors Oscar Wesse and Otto Marbith oversaw crossings while Uncle Sam Peter Pauls led the parade in Roseland. Ernest Aulrich dressed as a clown for merriment and Albert Schumrock supplied the orchestra. Schoon instructed conductors to forget fares as two and a half cent pieces were scarce, making the trip free for all.
