Robert Hollis narrates a tale aboard the Esmeralda a yacht of Girard Carrington at a stag party where a mysterious woman Vera seeks anonymity. Hollis secures an interview with her the next night she reveals only her name Carrington warns guests of an approaching war and notes he is organizing a copper pool.
In a night of rain and wreck, Hollis and McCann fight to reach a stricken Esmeralda. They scale drenched decks, rescue a trapped girl, and seize a hatchet to breach the pantry door as the ship sinks forward.
A narrator frees himself using a lantern to descend a wrecked deck door. Water rises to waist level as he fights to grip the door latch and escape, sensing a muffled cry and a voice shouting for help through the splashing chaos.

Fosdick lies dead amid wreckage as survivors cling to the dory and rails.
