Calumet Dredging Push Faces Funding and Indiana Hurdles
The Calumet District Clean Streams Committee pushes to finish the Little Calumet river dredging from the state line to the sag canal in Blue Island. With 85 percent done to Thorn Creek, $35,000 of a $50,000 state grant remains, and Indiana cooperation is uncertain as the panel seeks more funds and potential court action to restore water flow from Deep river.

Dredging of Little Calumet Ends Long Pollution Fight
The Little Calumet dredging project marks the end of a 13 year Clean Streams campaign to restore the river’s beauty. Legislation created a Sanitary Water Board and several towns were forced to install intercepting sewage plants. A $50,000 state appropriation, secured in 1939, funded the work, honoring late Kinney and Dr. Oliver among the original committee members.
