Origin of the Name Monee Traced to Ottawa Daughter
District Attorney John G. Drennan of the Illinois Central System reports the town of Monee near Harvey is named for Marie, a woman of mixed French and Ottawa heritage. Called Maunee by Ottawa speakers, she married French trader Joseph Bailey des Mesdein. She died at 83 on the Bailey homestead near Porter, Indiana. The Potawatomi treaty of 1832 granted a 1280 acre reservation to Monee’s daughters south of the town. William B. Ogden later bought the land for about five dollars an acre.
