Alfalfa Trials Show Huge Returns in Illinois
Vanney of Chartes in Velean County reports six acres of alfalfa on the George S Hanna Place yielded 3.5 tons per acre in 1909 with three cuts and hog pasturing that year. 83 hogs fed corn produced $462, hay valued at $195, total $657 from six acres. The project began with a July ground break in 1906 and continued with reseeding after winter damage. Coburn lauds alfalfa as key to modern agriculture and a great aid for Corn Belt farms facing protein shortages.

Tragic Death At Van Buren Street Station
Edward A Hergert died Saturday at Van Buren street station when he fell from the platform in front of a Blue Island train. His body was cut in two and interment was in St Louis after funeral services in Harvey. He was 46 and had lived in Harvey about three years. his wife and family resided in Louisville Kentucky. His relatives attended the funeral as investigators questioned the accident's cause.
