A South Holland Chamber of Commerce letter from Set. T. Julius and M. Jacobs praises home support. They thank locals for gifts and monthly letters, note many town soldiers, and report a Victory garden with beans pumpkins corn and tomatoes. They sign off with kept in touch and keep them flying.
A full color sound film They Live Forever focusing on spiritual themes of World War III will be shown at 8:30 Friday evening April 7 after a 7:30 Good Friday service at First Reformed Church of South Holland. Rev Jacob Blaauw notes Moody Institute staffer Irwin A Moon produced and distributed the film for army camps and naval training sites. The program includes Moon’s Sermons from Science demonstrations and scenes from army and navy camps.
Mrs Henry Van Milligen received a telegram from the War Department on March 20 stating her son William in the infantry in Italy was wounded on February 20. A recent note from the soldier says injuries are not serious and he is up and about though in hospital. Anne V Gard of Washington DC now visits the Gouwens. Mr and Mrs Aric Van Deursen announce the birth of a baby boy on March 27 at Ingalls Memorial Hospital.
Rev. E. Kooistra former pastor of Bethany Christian Reformed Church will talk at a Ladies Mission Society program in the Bethany church on Monday April 3 at 7 45. He serves as a Home Missionary in the east and works with servicemen in the campaign there. The message is described as inspiring and the public is urged to attend.
South Holland village board meets with President James Gouwens and six trustees present. The panel grants hall use for a monthly baby clinic on the second Thursday mornings and approves cabinets for the clinic. Other actions include sewer work planning on Wausau avenue, dirt removal ordinance review, a tool shed permit for Gerrit Schaap, and payment of attorney McGowan's $75 bill and overall bills totaling $964.77.
Simon Couwenhoeven died Sunday March 26 at Land Community hospital after birth November 19, 1861 in the Netherlands. Survivors include daughters Lena Jennie Mrs William Van Der Giessen and Cora of Harvey, sons Simon Jr of Sheboygan and Albert of Harvey, brother Albert of South Holland, ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Rev Jacob Blaauw officiated. interment in Oak Ridge cemetery.
Harold J. Gouwens of 608 East 159th street was commissioned a second lieutenant after graduating from Army Air Forces pilot school at Moody Field Georgia. He will pilot multi engine bombers transports and cargo planes and may serve as an instructor in the Army Air Forces training command.
