The Pointer Publications announces a new PHOTO PAGE feature this week. The Pointer Candid Camera will probe into quiet community efforts and spotlight worthy endeavors benefiting Dalton Riverdale and South Holland. Residents and organizations may be photographed as subjects to show life in the Tri-City area.
Arthur W. Quandt, longtime local businessman and hardware store owner, resides at 15109 Sunset in Dalton with his wife Mary Ripley Quandt. A Riverdale native, he has operated the Leyden Avenue hardware store for a decade and also owns a second shop in South Holland Pacesetter Shopping.
The Thornton Township Regular Republican Women’s Organization meets March 19 at 8 p.m. in Thornton Township Hall South Holland. President Mrs Ethel Savoie will preside. Guest speakers will include Republican candidates for the April election. Refreshments will be served.
The 1962 South Holland Little League announces spring registration for new residents and those absent last Fall. On March 24 from 10 a.m. to noon at the warming house in South Holland Park, 160th Place, boys ages nine to twelve on July 31, 1962 must bring a birth certificate and be accompanied by an adult. Registration closes that day to join minor league pending next Fall tryouts.
A new Tri City Young Democratic Club formed March 15 at the Dorchester Club Delton with members from Delton Riverdale and South Holland. Larry East elected temporary chairman and elections set for March 29 at 8 p.m. at the Dorchester Club. Raaymond Deany aged 8 of 13703 Lowe Riverdale was bitten by his own dog and treated at Thomsen Clinic. police say the animal is under observation.
Beets growers from Cook Will Lake Kankakee and DuPage counties met at McKinley school South Holland on March 13 to hear Great Western Sugar Co proposals to take over the Menominee Sugar Co plant in Green Bay Wisconsin. The meeting led to tentative contracts for 1500 acres after Menominee announced plant closure due to losses. Elmer Meyer of Menominee expressed optimism about Great Western absorbing the Green Bay plant and possibly expanding operations in Wisconsin.
John Douglas Wujcik, a seven pound twelve ounce baby boy, was delivered by cesarean Wednesday at Ingalls Memorial Hospital Harvey. Parents Edward and unnamed wife reside at 15568 Orchid Drive with siblings Diane Mary Donald Gregory Donna Dean and Dale Edward. Mrs. Wujcik and baby John Douglas are reported doing well.
A group of property owners in Ivy Gardens and Blouin subdivisions Daltons protest high real estate taxes. They submitted a 26 item questionnaire to the school board at a regular meeting last Wednesday evening and met with Thornton Township Assessor William Jacobs on February 22 to review levies.
A prairie fire at 151st and East End Ave in Dolton was extinguished by the Dolton Fire Department. No injuries reported and cause under investigation.
Thornridge P T A expects a record crowd for Cafe U.S.A. a gala musicale at Thornridge auditorium on Sibley and Cottage Grove in Dalton Friday and Saturday March 23 and 24. Eight o clock show time. Tickets cost 1 dollar with proceeds funding expandable coat racks and microphones for future Thornridge High productions. The Lassies dance band and adult mixed chorus perform with a floor show of dancing singing and comedy acts.
An advance 1960 report shows housing totals by village. Dolton records 5,050 units with 4,245 owner and 476 renter, 329 vacant. 4,799 sound, 210 deteriorating, 41 dilapidated. Riverdale lists 3,606 total with 2,807 owner, 710 renter, 89 vacant. 3,462 sound, 110 deteriorating, 34 dilapidated. South Holland reports 2,846 total with 2, negative text for owner and 298 vacant. 2,753 sound, 69 deteriorating, 24 dilapidated. Deteriorating rates: Dolton 4.2%, Riverdale 3.0%, South Holland 2.42%. Dilapidated rates: Dolton 81%, Riverdale 4%, South Holland 84%.
