Smoke Dump Sparks Rail Fire Near Riverdale

A summons was issued for Charles Fritz owner of the 138th and Ashland dump after residents complained of heavy smoke. Sparks from the dump ignited three B and O gondola cars north of the site, prompting fire department response and a court appearance set for March 18.

Riverdale sewer system passes March storm test

The Village of Riverdale reports its new storm relief sewer system handled a heavy Saturday rainfall with no flooding in Ivanhoe. Officials led by Frank Mraz say the system met engineering expectations, replacing street drains and adding manholes to improve surface water removal.

Driver in Riverdale Truck-Tram Collision

Walter F. McMurray, 46, of Chicago, was injured Thursday afternoon when his semi-tractor trailer was struck by a diesel engine at Indiana Avenue and 138th Street in Riverdale. McMurray said he stopped at a crossing, proceeded, and could not see the engine in time. The crash toppled the trailer onto its side. the engineer, Charles J. Rabidoux, claimed the flasher and lights were operating. Riverdale Fire Department washed gasoline from the street.

Pranksters threw 25 rocks and broke 12 panes at a Riverdale residence 13733 Illinois St. The owners discovered the damage Sunday February 36 around 3:45 p.m. Police canvassed the area but no witnesses were found.

Break Ground For New Riverdale Baptist Church

On a cold day the Riverdale Baptist Church community gathered at Park School to break ground for a new church. Rev. Robert Klingberg and Mgr. Milton Bloom spoke as shovels moved soil. The church bought the site for 8600 in 1957. construction will begin immediately with an 80,000 estimate and a 300-seat multi purpose brick building with a 40 foot spire and four zone hot water heating system.

Restitution Ordered After Ducks and Geese Destruction

Dolton parents pay restitution to the Piscateers Club after three grammar school youths admitted destroying 11 wild mallard ducks and two rare African geese on January 16. Chief Grover Cogskell says the youths are on six months probation and must report to him every two weeks.
