Sgt Willey Finds Cousin in Paris Hospital

Sgt George B Willey of Riverdale Illinois traced his West Virginia cousin in a Paris hospital during a wartime trip. He had not seen family since 1941. The cousin was recovering three beds away as Willey was en route to another British hospital for treatment after trench foot from fighting in Germany.

Village restores disposal rights near Illinois Brick site

Dalton trustees decided to allow village residents to dump refuse in the lowland west of the Illinois Brick clayhole after Piscateers Inc lost the lease. Permits will be issued at the clerk’s office. The board ordered street sweeping to clear icy stones and to protect drainage. The water committee will study low water pressure in Ivanhoe Manor and South Ivanhoe, with time to review before complaints. Youth Day may be staged again in the village hall, and on March 27 all village offices will be vacated for local schoolchildren to fill in.

Curtis Schools Rank Third in City Paper Drive

Curtis and Riverdale elementary schools led District 9 with strong wastepaper salvaging results. The two schools collected 54 547 pounds in six weeks ending February 16, earning top district honors again. Harold Osenga and Shirley Gonzales led Riverdale. Son of Former Residents Killed Over Germany

Mr. and Mrs. William Dunker of Hammond Indiana learned from a War Department telegram that their son Ernest W Dunker was killed in action over Germany on February 15 He was a radio operator and gunner aboard a B 17 bomber Born August 31 1921 in Dalton he left January 1 for overseas duty after training at Yuma Arizona and El Paso Texas His brother John a B 24 pilot has been a prisoner of war in Germany since May 10 1944

Riverdale Pfc John M Braun Reported Killed In Action

Pfc John M Braun son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Braun of Riverdale and nephew of Rev John N Weiler was killed in the Philippine Islands on February 2. He served in the army medical corps and entered service April 8 1943. He is mourned by parents two brothers a sister and a younger brother. A private memorial mass was held at St Marys Church.
