South Holland Launches Park Summer Recreation Program
The village inaugurates a summer program for ages 6 to 14 with 300 signups on Monday June 26. Activities director Jan Zapehenk plans weekly tournaments in volleyball horseshoes tetherball checkers badminton croquet and clock golf plus softball and arts and crafts. Hours run 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday until Friday August 6 with an evening show planned for parent viewing.

M Sluis Completes Crane Shovel Operator Course
Army PFC Merle T. Sluis, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Sluis Jr., South Holland, finished a six week crane and shovel operator course at The European Engineer Ordnance School in Murnau Germany. He trained on crawler and truck mounted crane shovels and attachments and is stationed in France. He entered the Army in 1959 and arrived overseas in 1960 after graduating Thornton Township High School in Harvey.

Safety Council warns on dilroad flares dangers
The National Safety Council says dilroad flares are the latest dangerous fad for kids, with 58 injuries in 1980 from fireworks and fusees. Seven injuries were burns, five to children under nine. The NSC urges use only as distress signals for motorists or railroad engineers.

South Holland Plans Fourth of July Picnic and Fireworks
The village hosts a community picnic in the park sponsored by combined churches with activities for all ages. A morning Little League doubleheader, 1:30 p.m. children’s races, an adult baseball game, a guest sermon, and a band concert cap the day. A professional fireworks display at dusk closes the celebration funded by local residents. Canvassing by the American Legion and Lions Club raised funds for the event.

Army Specialist Donald J Dekker of South Holland has been promoted to specialist four in Germany. He serves in the 75th Artillery as a personnel specialist in the artillery's Service Battery at Hanau. Dekker enlisted in March 1961 and completed basic training at Fort Hood, Texas.
