Tax collections in Cook County rise to record high
Cook County 1939 tax collections end June 1 at 96.72 million, up 3.12 million from last year, with officials predicting well over 100 million once town collections are added. County Treasurer John Toman notes only 20 dollars in counterfeit money found, with no loss to the county. July 1 marks a 2 percent delinquency penalty. Nearby, Thorn Township reports first half 1989 taxes at 650 thousand, up 43 thousand from 1988, suggesting 1939 total may reach about 900 thousand or more, potentially doubling seven years ago.
