Christmas in the North Country amid tales and gifts
A memory from a youth in Silas Wright era opens with a lost pocketbook and a village hunt for 2700 dollars. The narrator returns home to Christmas with Uncle Peabody and Aunt Deel, sharing warmth, a first tree, and gifts, including a silver watch. Old Kate, the Silent Woman, receives charity and solace as the family reconciles past hardships and a simple, heartfelt holiday.
