South Holland Liable In 1958 Traffic Death
The Village of South Holland was found liable for the 1958 death of Joseph Pochopien at 147th and Halsted. Superior Court Judge L Erie Carew awarded the widow the maximum $30 000. Pochopien, employed by Sherwin Williams Paint Co, was fatally struck by a South Holland fire truck at a signal in his favor as he traveled south on Halsted. The truck’s siren status and emergency designation were disputed. witnesses offered conflicting views on whether the vehicle was operating as an emergency vehicle at the time. The jury reached the verdict after about 30 minutes of deliberation. the village’s insurer was represented by Atty W P Butler.
