Under River Cable Tunnel Replacing Seafloor Lines
Illinois Bell begins a major project to route cables under the river at 135th and Indiana Ave. Seven submarine cables are being replaced by 24 conduit paths, each 783 feet long, to carry subscriber and long distance lines, TV circuits, and truck cables. The 85 foot deep tunnel will run well below the river bottom and construction by Kenny Construction runs stalled to finish in weeks. The shaft at 134th Place and Indiana Ave. will be filled to bed rock and capped to street level.
