Illinois Bell officials announce a $160 million expansion to add thousands of miles of circuits and 938 new switchboard positions plus hundreds of operators. War demand boosted telephone use. long distance calls rose 18.7 percent from last year and 129 percent since 1940. About 174000 calls daily by June, with 275000 new telephones installed since the war’s end and 80000 awaiting service. The company staff has grown 73.3 percent since 1940 to 22161 operators, as Western Electric speeds peacetime production to meet the backlog. The project requires complex, tailormade equipment and time to implement.
