Wild Man Near Hammond Rampage Ends in Death
A brutal attack east of Hammond left five wounded before George Hanlon of Hammond led a bold chase. The fugitive, armed with a shotgun revolver and knife, was shot in a swamp after Hanlon swam a slough with his rifle above his head. The body was taken to Gary, Indiana. The man’s identity remains unknown, suspected to be an escaped lunatic. The era saw panic among residents amid robberies of chicken coops. Also a 22 year old woman, Anna Normoyle, fell to her death from a 14th floor window at the Masonic Temple during a separate incident last Wednesday. In 1898 Greenleaf killed himself after shouting a warning from a railing on the sixteenth floor.
