South Holland considers higher street levy and upgrades

An ordinance to raise the street levy to .0662 is studied by the ordinance committee. If recommended, a vote to adopt would occur at the July 24 meeting. Joint discussions review 163rd street improvements and off site work in Pacesetter Park areas and related drainage concerns by village officials and staff.

South Holland Approves Budget Totals for 1961-82

The village attorney read the first reading of South Holland’s annual appropriation ordinance for 1961 to 1982. The budget totals 590 238 dollars with 215 509 from taxes and 374 730 from other sources. Salaries and public safety costs run to 384 200 dollars while streets and bridges exceed 75 000 dollars and park maintenance 36 000. New library funding appears in the budget.

First Reformed Youth Win Parade Best Float

South Holland First Reformed Church youth won first place in the Christian Endeavor convention parade in Chicago. Their float titled One World One God featured an open Bible and a world topped by a cross with riders Bob Paarlberg Vicki Gowens Barbara Mossell Carol De Young Janice Gouwens and Barbara Zandstra in foreign costumes.

Thornridge High School Registration for New Residents

New Thornridge district students of high school age must register for the fall term. The main office in building B is open weekdays 9 am to 4 pm, except Saturdays. Assistant principals John Tilton and Arnold Koester oversee the registration process.

Two South Holland Men Beautify New Library

Trustee Laurence Flickner thanked Sidney Watt and Carl R. Gustafson at a village board meeting for beautifying the new library. Watt built the planter and Gustafson paints a mural in the children's section featuring characters like Sir Lancelot Robin Hood and Jack in the Beanstalk.

South Holland Farmer Unhurt In Accident

A South Holland farmer, William P. Gouwens, escaped injury when an insecticide sprayer overturned onto him. He was taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital for observation after the incident while working on his tomato crop. He was released after X rays.

Dolton Police Department Adds Officer Moline

Chief Grover Cogswell announced that Patrolman Raymond Moline joins the Dolton police force effective July 1. Moline, wife Patricia and two children reside at 14832 Langley. Dolton now has ten officers plus four clerks. one more officer is planned around September 1 as the town grows.

Dolan Rites Held For Hilda Dolan In South Holland

Hilda Deeling Dolan 64 died July 10 in Ingalls Memorial Hospital Harvey after illness. Born November 5, 1896 in Chicago she lived at 733 Brian Place Chicago and worked as a Curtiss Candy Co foreman. Funeral held July 23 at 1 30 pm at Vroegh Funeral Home South Holland with Rev. Robert Wildman Beth el Reformed Church Harvey. Interment private.
