Riverdale Park District sponsors a Splash Party at Pacesetter Pool 187th and Eggleston Friday night July 12 from 9 to 11. A $2 per couple swimming fee supports the pool. Lew Phillips will call the event as participants seek Squareduck Badges.
Dolton architect Jack Van Scheltema 33, of Meadow Lane, won the Gate Way Junior Chamber of Commerce Roseland Young Man of the Year award on June 19 at Club Allegro. His work with the South End Chamber of Commerce includes redesigning the chamber building and aiding area development. He and his wife Jane have two children and have lived in Dolton since 1957.
Among 141 overweight patients, mostly women, few became depressed during dieting. Researchers note successful dieting correlated with lower anxiety and mood improvement, challenging the notion that dieting inherently worsens mental health.
South Holland implements a summer sprinkling ordinance based on house numbers. Even addresses water on even calendar days and uneven addresses on uneven days.
Teen Center hosts dances Monday and Friday evenings from 7 30 to 11 00 at Harvey Memorial YMCA. Monday is Record Hop Night and Friday is Band Night. High school YMCA members and guests invited. Record Hop Night costs 25 cents per person and Band Night 50 cents per person.
A baby boy named Charles Robert arrived at 13901 Michigan Ave Roverdale on July 7 weighing 8 pounds 14 ounces. He is the son of Charles Schmidt a Riverdale fire engineer and his wife, with Fire Chief Herb Schmidt as the baby's uncle.
The National Education Association convention in Detroit drew several attendees from area schools. Included were Stanley M. Clausen of Thornridge High School and Ralph R. Rowe, Lorain Kubick from District 149, Virginia Johnson from District 148, and Arthur H. Harms of Thornton Township High School.
Captain Francis L. Cleland son of Mr and Mrs F L Cleland of Dalton is on two weeks active duty with the Marine Corps Reserve. He serves in HMM 776 and will fly a UH34D helicopter from the Santa Ana air facility starting June 22 returning July 6. Independent note: no other individuals named beyond family.
Dr. Thomas Predey of 912 East 167th Place South Holland has been promoted to assistant professor of science at St Josephs College Calumet Center East Chicago Indiana.
Charles A. Swain of Cape May New Jersey was elected president of Kiwanis International at the 48th annual convention in Atlantic City. Attending were Mr and Mrs Nolte and Mr and Mrs William Van Someren. Swain, a 35 year Kiwanian and former bank executive, will lead about 262 000 Kiwanis members in 5200 clubs across the United States Canada Mexico the Bahamas and Western Europe. The 1964 convention will be in Los Angeles California.
The Parent Teacher League of St Paul Lutheran School will hold a paper drive on Saturday July 13 from 8 30 a m till noon. Deliveries may be made to the rear of the school or call VI 9 2645 by Friday evening for pickup. The school sits at 245 East 138th Street Dolton.
A tentative budget and appropriation ordinance for School District 149 was adopted by the Board of Education and will be available for public inspection at the superintendent's office, 15141 Dorchester Ave., Dalton, through August 14, 1963. A public hearing on the budget will be held at 8 p.m. August 14 in the Board meeting room, Berger School, Van den Berg addition, 14833 Avalon.
A station wagon driven by Oneda Parker of Phoenix lost control on Bibley near Indiana avenue on July 1. Parker crossed the center line and struck a car driven by Joanna J. Van Heel of 13822 Park Dalton, causing damage to the left side and rear door. Parker claims a pedal mix up and was cited for negligent driving.
Dolton police logged two bicycle thefts in July. A 26 inch red bicycle belonging to the Burns family at 65 W 139th St Riverdale was taken from Dolton Park carnival grounds. The Gregory family at 14622 Edbrooke Dolton reported a bicycle stolen from their premises.
