Keeping on the Job by Leonard A Barrett

A column contrasts dignity in low paid work with choosing a welfare dole over employment. A gas station clerk earns 18 weekly, once a bank teller, while a garage job offer of 50 monthly is rejected by a man preferring unemployment. The piece argues work dignifies life and sustains independence. It notes workers persevere through fatigue in the dignity of labor. The scene closes with portraits of Aileen Perry and Hedwig Koepke posing for photographers at an 80 foot well in St. Petersburg, Florida.
