Izaak Walton League Plans Bird Sanctuary at Mc Ginnis Slough

A Blue Island Izaak Walton League delegation led by Emil Faber and Dr. P. D. Blodgett met with the Cook County Board of Commissioners on February 3 to discuss turning the Mc Ginnis slough at Orland into a lake and bird sanctuary. Blodgett argued the project would benefit Cook County youth and conserve forest preserves while reducing rushes and weeds along a newly enlarged shoreline. The plan, modeled on Ontario’s sanctuary approach, aims to create a safe local refuge for wildlife and public enjoyment, with final decisions to be reviewed by a county committee within two weeks.

The Practical Joker and a Callous Joke

An essay recalls brutal past efforts to remove criminals by exile and argues the practical joker should be wiped out. It contrasts humor with harm and recounts a Christmas night prank on a homesick freshman, illustrating how a joke can wound rather than delight.
