Panama letters from Bob Haney describe heat and canal life
In a Panama Canal correspondence from December 16, 1922, Robert Haney notes excellent canal running order and compares regional progress to the United States. He recounts traveling from Havana with the United Fruit Co aboard the S.S. Santa Marta, boarding in Colon, Panama, and seeing sailors, natives sleeping on deck, and a death at sea. He observes a tense border zone with prohibition on one side and Colon’s lively district on the other, mentions submarines visited, and signs off from Panama.
