Preservation of a Siberian Mammoth by River Floods
Sixty one years ago a Russian engineer named Benkendorf witnessed the Lena River carve a new channel and unearth a frozen mammoth bog carcass. The thawing flood freed the hind legs and carried the body toward the sea. Its tusks were removed and the stomach contained last meals of fir shoots.
