Pilot Vernon Schaefer Missing Over Japan Since November
Lt Vernon Schaefer co pilot of a B 29 Superfortress has been missing in action over Japan since November 21 telegram from the War Department to his parents Mr and Mrs George Schaefer of Riverdale noting the fact He enlisted September 25 1940 and served in Alaska as an airplane mechanic before earning pilot wings July 29 1948 at Stockton California He previously participated in the June 15 1944 bombing raid on Yawata Japan the first raid on the Japanese home land since 1942 He trained with B 29s at Victoria Kansas before leaving for overseas and before entering the service worked for Arcady Farms Milling Co He has a brother George at home and a letter from the missing flyer was received by his parents on Sunday

South Holland Bay Struck at IHB Crossing
Richard Herbst 18 of South Holland was struck by a train on the Indiana Harbor Belt railroad at the Indiana Ave crossing near 140th St late Tuesday afternoon. He was brought to Riverside police station unconscious but later found not seriously injured at Ingalls Memorial Hospital Harvey. Four occupants of a two car collision on the SHB overhead at 139th St and Halsted Tuesday afternoon sustained slight injuries. Walter Gustafson and his son were treated for head injuries and lacerations, while Charles Breback and Mae Breback sustained cuts and were treated at a hospital after the crash.
