Ben Dunkley, a District 149 board member since 1969, submitted his resignation effective at the end of the Wednesday meeting. Former president John Condon called his departure a great loss and noted Dunkley’s long service including two vice president terms and leadership during the 1972 teacher strike.
Senior citizens urged a six county transit authority to rescue the Chicago Transit Authority and area mass transit systems. At the Dolton hearing, officials expected a broad turnout as commuters and civic leaders voiced support and called for fuel tax funding.

Police report three semis burglarized at about 10 30 p m on August 11 in the Union 76 Truck Stop lot. Seven male suspects were seen fleeing in two vehicles with $750 in meat, including $600 in frozen beef trimmings and $150 in turkey.
Two bicycle thefts were reported in Dolton in recent weeks. Irene Collatz of 14239 S Ingleside reported a Sears 10 speed boys bicycle valued at 70 dollars, orange with white handlebars and a black seat. Thomas G Barrins of 14224 S Dobson reported a Huff 10 speed 26 inch bicycle stolen August 8, yellow with a black seat, taken from his front yard.
The Riverdale Public Library District trustees adopt a budget and appropriations ordinance and plan a special Aug 27 meeting to pass the tax levy. Two board vacancies will be filled by Cook County Board appointments with Therese Klir and Bob Selvig named as nominees.
Riverdale village board awarded the public works truck bid to Cumberland Service Center at 32,770 dollars and the main sidewalk removal and replacement bid to Kirwin Construction at 1.60 dollars per square foot. The board authorized financing the truck over two years and approved related public safety and infrastructure actions including a rescue truck bid, submersible fire pump purchase, and traffic safety signs.
