Chicago Adopts Dual Grade Milk Ordinance
The city council approved a milk ordinance creating two grades for sale in Chicago. All milk bottles must state inspected or pasteurized, with dairies needing a health department permit and a 65 points score to qualify for inspected milk. By mid 1913 producers must vet cows for TB and other diseases, while pasteurized milk rules apply to lower scoring dairies. Temperature controls and future score raises are outlined, with arbitration for pasteurizer disputes and strict sale limits for nonconforming milk.
