Illinois Onion Set Growers Exchange a cooperative pioneer
The Illinois Union Set Growers Exchange traced its 1929 founding by eleven South Holland onion set growers led by Tunis Holleman. It built two warehouses in South Holland and Mt. Prospect with capacities of 50 000 and 40 000 bushels, expanded Cook County membership, and grew to a coast to coast trade while maintaining a 100 percent cooperative ethos. By May 31 1943 its thirteenth fiscal year reported all mortgages paid, solid capital reserves, and nearly 500 000 dollars in sales.
