Talk About Hard Luck At German Songfest In St Johns
More than 15 000 Germans and German Americans gathered at St Johns Indiana for a large songfest. The Milwaukee Club led by 80 singers won first prize. 30 barrels of near beer were prepared but government agents seized the beer as it exceeded the legal limit, prompting resupply efforts and a long pump kept running to quench crowds. The incident sparked talk of a grim misfortune and a charged accusation of a dirty Irish trick.
