The canal is expected to be ready for ship passage by October with official opening set for January 1, 1915. Fram under Roald Amundsen is planned to be the first vessel through. The Northwestern Gas Light and Coke Company transferred its properties this week to the Public Service Company of Northern Illinois. The company took possession of all works and offices and changed all printing and advertising to read Public Service Company of Northern Illinois, Successor to the Northwestern Gas Light & Coke Co.
The Highlawn Hose Company held a family outing at Highlawn Grove near the Indiana Harbor railroad last Sunday. A marquee event was a baseball game between married and single members, won by the single men 16 to 15. Umpire Billy Stutzreim officiated as Frank Stiemann’s powerful bat neared the ball. Lineups listed include Single Men Ray Bishop Otto Paul John Diehl Arthur Goos Henry Lotz Leonard Lotz Raymond Simnick Walter Trapp and Married Men Max Wilkens George Trapp Fred Ludwig Frank Stiemann Harry Seilien Julius Wilkens Herman Paul Henry Goos.
