Stamp Printing Methods at the Bureau in Washington
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing uses two methods. Flat-bed presses print stamps on a flat surface with straight edges, while rotary presses print on a moving belt and produce slightly larger stamps. Rotary presses dominate when many stamps are needed, and the Maryland issue was printed on the flat-bed due to revenue stamp production at the time.
