A severe hail storm swept over Alton and nearby areas on the thirteenth, flattening a stone building, killing many hogs fowls and prairie birds, and devastating trees and crops. Hail drifted four feet deep in places.
A passenger on the steamer M from Cincinnati to St Louis quarreled with a Hoosier. The Hoosier, angry at taunts about cabbage heads and language, attacked diners with a plate, knocked others down, and caused chaos. The captain interrupted to arrest two thieves whose pockets and an eagle-studded purse matched the Hoosier’s accusations. The incident ended with the Hoosier spared ashore and a vow to avoid further insults to Indians.
A London Times critique compares John Bull and Brother Jonathan as rival youths from public schools. It notes their clashes, later camaraderie, and warns continued taunts could push them toward a genial, yet quarrelsome, friendship amid holiday visits and shared jests.
An act of devoted heroism recounts the Griffith steamer pilot who, amid spreading flames, held the wheel while others fled. After the boat halted, he passed through the fire and jumped overboard. His body, burned, was recovered in Sandusky and buried. Richard Maon, longtime Sandusky resident, is honored for his sacrifice. Also notes the birth of four boys in Manchester Grove and a quip about hemp rope cures and colonial era etiquette.
