A rural parish witnesses a dramatic rescue as Hannah Lamond’s infant is saved from an eagle’s talons. A mother scales a perilous cliff, guided by faith, while villagers below kneel in prayer and the scene unfolds into a charitable asylum tableau with baron, patients, and救.
Two of the best conducted lunatic asylums in the world are in Naples, at Aversa and Palermo. The Palermo hospital is run by a whimsical Sicilian baron with government support, offering free care to the poor and luxurious boarding for the affluent. Visitors meet a courteous porter and see many patients, including a violent sixtyish patient and a young, disturbed woman.
A historical note recalls a German practice where a condemned woman could be spared if a man offered to marry her. In Vienna a spectator, a Neapolitan, pled to save the girl by marriage but she refused, asserting autonomy over her fate and choosing execution over an unwanted match. The requested pardon was not granted.
A judge taunts a bearded witness by saying conscience matches his beard length. The country man retorts that the judge has no conscience at all if he measures conceits by beards, prompting a sharp exchange in the courtroom.
