Rio Rancho Rams host middle school alumni game day

The Rio Rancho boys basketball program will hold its second annual Middle School Alumni event on Saturday at the RRHS gym. Lincoln and Eagle Ridge eighth graders start at 2 p.m. followed by the alumni and Rams at 3:30. Admission is 5 for adults 3 for students and free for under 6. The alumni won 86 85 last year and aim for a repeat.

Southwest players compete at USTA 180 National Championships

Sean Gabaldon and Cyrus Madrid of Albuquerque compete for Southwest in the 2015 USTA Junior Team Tennis 180 National Championships at Cayce Tennis Center South Carolina. The event gathers top 32 teams across intermediate and advanced levels with 250 players, coached by Johnny Parkes. An introductory lacrosse clinic for ages 7-15 runs today at Mariposa Park with a $25 fee, includes shirt and snacks and a one-year U S Lacrosse membership.

CHS junior Veto Virgin earns high honors at Barry Church Camp

Cleveland High School junior Veto Virgin trained with Dallas Cowboys safety Barry Church at the Barry Church Football Camp in Denton on the UNT campus. The 14 to 18 year old camp provided daily instruction and lectures, and Virgin was named to the Gridiron Elite Club, with his details sent to over 2,500 college coaches and an invitation to the Old Bowl, the nation s oldest high school all star game.

Storm outlast Hawks behind stellar offense in Albuquerque

Cleveland stormed to a 54-20 win at Nusenda Stadium after starting slow. Senior QB Gabe Ortega threw two touchdown passes and ran for another 76 yards as Marcus Williams and Ryan Anderson joined in the aerial attack. Shawn Nieto rushed for 170 yards with two short TDs, while Justice Jackson nabbed a pick and Antonio Williams added a 37-yard scoring reception. Duran connected on two field goals and 6 of 6 extra points as the Storm improved to 8-0, 2-0 with a looming showdown vs Cibola next Friday.

Rams stay in 1 6A title hunt with 36 17 win over Cibola

Rio Rancho remains in the 1 6A race after beating Cibola 36 17 at Nusenda Stadium. Josh Foley scored three TDs to reach 23 on the season before suffering a broken fibula and ligament damage, ending his year. Coach Howes said Foley will miss 6 8 weeks of rehab.

Rams lineman Grant Hermanns tears for season ender

Rio Rancho High School offensive lineman Grant Hermanns, verbally committed to Iowa State, will miss the rest of the season due to an apophysis injury. He explained shedding tears over the setback after telling teammates his season is over and said he will heal and return once healthy. Coach David Howes praised his leadership, resilience, and plan to contribute again after recovery.

Storm boys finish third in district after 1 1 draw

Cleveland High coach called the 1 1 draw with Volcano Vista a disappointing result but said his team created more dangerous chances and could have been better organized defensively. He noted the Hawks showed improvement and that a win over Cibola on Wednesday could improve their seed.
