Diversity Day event in New Mexico National Guard program

The New Mexico National Guard hosts its second annual Diversity Day with a keynote on cultural diversity. Food includes African Irish Italian Jewish Native American Polish and Hispanic American dishes. Entertainment features the New Mexico Army National Band Del Norte Drill Team and the Rio Rancho Jump Ropers. Admission is 10 for adults 5 for children 5 to 12 includes lunch samples and door prizes. The armory is six miles northwest of Bernalillo on NM 44.

Finalists named for Rio Rancho city administrator post

Three finalists vie to be Rio Rancho city administrator. James Jimenez currently serves as finance director and acting administrator, with Gary M. Jackson of Lawton Oklahoma and Jerome L. Trojan of Las Cruces as the other candidates. Mayor John Jennings said interviews are underway and Jimenez has discussed the role with him.

STEP program targets bad drivers in Rio Rancho

The Rio Rancho Department of Public Safety launches the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program to curb auto crashes. Running from October through November 6, it focuses on high-volume areas with a "vero-tolerance attitude" toward following too closely and red light violations. Rio Rancho High fires teacher for negligence

The Rio Rancho School Board terminated Shabbir Ahmed a high school computer teacher hired this year after an in class laptop incident left a student temporarily blinded by toxic material from a broken screen. Ahmed claimed the screen was broken on purpose and blamed clutter in the classroom for supervision difficulties.

Rio Rancho ACT scores below state and national averages

Rio Rancho Public Schools report first ACT profile for ARPS district showing an average of 19.9 in 1998-1999, below New Mexico’s 20.1 and the nation’s 21.0. Counselor Mike Reiley says scores reflect the district’s early stage and notes ARHS is an ACT testing center this year, with encouragement to take both ACT and SAT. An ACT administration at Rio Rancho High is planned this Saturday with about 60 percent participation.

Rio Rancho duo win tourism honors at New Mexico meeting

Judi Snow Rio Rancho tourism director was named Top Tourism Professional of the Year at the statewide Tourism Association of New Mexico conference. Yvonne Joiner also received an award, with Mayor John Jennings praising Rio Rancho’s tourism leadership and inviting the next conference to be held there.
