Celebration of Youth in Rio Rancho on Oct 7

Rio Rancho Parks and Recreation will host Celebration of Youth at the Rio Rancho Sports Complex on High Resort Boulevard from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The free event offers family activities including basketball free throw contests obstacle courses softball and football throwing soccer accuracy and more for all ages 3 and up. Demonstrations in Tae Kwon Do gymnastics BMX and skateboarding, plus performances by Center Stage School of Dance Laguna Pueblo Dancers Mariachi Nuevo Mexico and a magic show. Police shoot in personal crisis gunman

North Hills man Norman Varela 37 was shot by two Department of Public Safety officers after threatening self harm. He died at University Hospital after lifeguard transport. Officers on administrative leave during the investigation and crisis negotiators worked for hours before Varela emerged for a cigarette pack request.

Thousands Attend Rio Rancho Oktoberfest Across Regions

Rio Rancho’s Oktoberfest drew about 12 000 visitors over three days with attendees from Germany Austria Wisconsin and across the United States. Organizer George Kitchen said it was sensational and family friendly with a kids area and long lines for entry. Rio Rancho Country Club put up for sale after Chapter 11 filing by Golf Company of Nevada owed to Bay View Mortgage Acceptance. Richard Chulick says he hopes to avoid losing the course to the highest bidder. Court filings show about 3.2 million owed plus 600 thousand to contractors.
