Rio Rancho Parks and Recreation will host Celebration of Youth at the Rio Rancho Sports Complex on High Resort Boulevard from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The free event offers family activities including basketball free throw contests obstacle courses softball and football throwing soccer accuracy and more for all ages 3 and up. Demonstrations in Tae Kwon Do gymnastics BMX and skateboarding, plus performances by Center Stage School of Dance Laguna Pueblo Dancers Mariachi Nuevo Mexico and a magic show. North Hills man Norman Varela 37 was shot by two Department of Public Safety officers after threatening self harm. He died at University Hospital after lifeguard transport. Officers on administrative leave during the investigation and crisis negotiators worked for hours before Varela emerged for a cigarette pack request.
