Balsa to life as Rasmussen carves kachina dolls

Jeanette Rasmussen shapes life sized kachina dolls from balsa, spending 40 to 60 hours per piece. The dolls depict animals, clowns, and conscience figures used in Pueblo dances starting at winter solstice. Rasmussen has entered fairs since 1984 and sells most pieces for about 85 dollars, hoping her grandson will join later.
