Fort Union NM a long gone frontier bastion and monument
Fort Union New Mexico once stood as a vital defense and supply hub along the Santa Fe Trail. Built 1851 to protect commerce and fight plains tribes, it evolved into a major quartermaster depot with a large hospital, then declined after the railroad reached the territory and was abandoned in 1891.
