Recall drive targets Williams seat after petition filed
Phil Tafoya a District 1 resident gathered 22 signatures to trigger a recall election against City Councilor Michael Williams filing them with the city clerk. The charter requires 15 valid District 1 signatures or 20 percent of Williams' 74 votes in 2000. The clerk has 10 business days to verify. If certified a special election will be scheduled. at least 75 votes are needed to recall. Williams says he has strong support from constituents. Tafoya began the effort in March amid a council clash over a former council seat vacancy and mayoral maneuvering.

Rio Rancho Public Schools released TerraNova CTBS results from March showing overall gains with notable strength in third grade language and math. Ninth grade science and fourth grade social studies dipped slightly districtwide, while Puesta del Sol Elementary posted broad gains, aided by a move to a new building.

Principals chosen for new Rio Rancho schools
The Rio Rancho Public Schools board appointed Linda Banker to lead the new elementary school and Scott Affentranger to head the eighth and ninth grade academy. Banker leaves seven years at Rio Rancho Elementary. Affentranger comes from Rio Rancho High School Fine Arts. Both will oversee early planning for their campuses set to open August 2002 on 40th Street near Idalia Road and in the Enchanted Hills subdivision.

Cop chase ends with man’s death in Bernalillo chase
A Sandoval County deputy on administrative leave after a late night pursuit in Bernalillo left John Salazar dead. Deputy Sammy Marquez fired four shots that missed the suspect before Salazar reportedly killed himself with a .380 firearm. The chase began when Salazar’s speeding Dodge Caravan drew attention from Sandia Pueblo and Bernalillo officers.
