Longtime Sandoval County clerk retires amid primary filings
After filing for the June 5 New Mexico primaries, Sandoval County Clerk Sally Padilla 74 announces retirement ending a 10 term tenure. Her deputy and Rio Rancho area reps Paula Papponi Francine Sanchez and Eileen Moreno Garbagni seek the clerk post as write-in candidates. Padilla recalls growth from three typed staff to 18 during her 41 years in office.

Rio Rancho man gets maximum seven-year term in stabbing death
Robert P. Sanchez, 29, received seven years for felonious aggravated battery and tampering with evidence in the September 2010 stabbing death of 24 year old Michael Checkley, a Rio Rancho High School graduate and Rams swimmer. He accepted a plea dropping a second degree murder charge in exchange for testifying against co defendant Joseph Allen. Checkley died after a brawl on Golf Course Road.
