Firefighters rescued a woman from a house fire in Rio Rancho before smoke inhalation proved fatal. She was treated and released, another resident was away, and the Red Cross is housing the victim as investigators probe the cause, believed to have started in a garage. Fire marshal continues inquiry.
Boone testifies he was on scene as officers investigated Smith's death after a September 10 2005 party fight. Assistant DA Chabra says Tillinghast stabbed Smith severing his aorta during a clash between groups. Defense claims self defense and protecting friends. Trial continues in Rio Rancho.
New Mexico lawmakers approved two measures to curb drunken driving. A Senate ignition interlock bill (SB 437) would require new residents with out of state DWI convictions to install interlock devices, approved 26 to 6. A House blood alcohol testing bill would set a presumption of intoxication at 0.08 within three hours of driving, passed unanimously in the House. Both chambers must align on a single bill for the governor to act.
Senate 309 measures passed the Senate 447 passed the House and 397 House measures await Senate action. Measures that have passed both chambers total 6 bills. SB 191 was signed by the governor to allow alcohol sales at gasoline stations via the Senate Corporations and Transportation Committee. Carrara sought advancement while noting DWI concerns.
