Bruening Wins Rio Rancho Mayoral Race by Wide Margin
Rio Rancho voters elected David E. Bruening mayor by a two to one margin over City Councilor Alice Jakumin in the March 2 election. Bruening carried all 12 precincts with 2,179 votes to 1,076 for Jakumin, as two city council seats changed hands and a 0.25 percent gross receipts tax increase was approved. Official canvass on March 4 shows 3,521 votes cast and turnout near 55 percent. incumbent Frederick E. Kellogg and Richard S. Wiles won council seats, Gertrude E. Geibig narrowly defeated Suzanne E. McAfee for the third seat, and Municipal Judge William R. Conner ran unopposed with 2,262 votes.

A 33,000 square foot shopping plaza adjoining Smiths Food Store in Rio Rancho could begin construction in about six weeks. Hawkins and Associates plans additions to the north and south sides to match Smiths architecture.
